Details and Information

Common Names

Kansas thistle, Texas thistle, Mexican thistle, Colorado bur

Description

Height: up to 2 feet 

Flower Color: Yellow

Leaves: Oblong with deep rounded lobes that are covered in dense, stiff, and sharp spines

Habitat: Overgrazed pastures, rangeland, corrals, feedlots, right-of-ways, and waste areas

Growing Season: Germinates in the spring and blooms from late June to early August

Best Time to Treat: Spring and early summer months 

Other Facts

  • Poisonous to cattle 
  • Can cause gastrointestinal effects, neurological problems, death, and possible birth defects in cattle 
  • Burs can grow up to 3/8 inch in diameter in the fall
